About this tree

The Chicago Hardy Fig is the toughest fig you can grow, with roots that survive subzero winters and resprout to fruit on new wood. It grows fast to 10-15 ft. tall and 9-12 ft. wide and is hardy in USDA zones 5-10, far colder than most figs. In summer it ripens loads of sweet, rich, mahogany-purple figs with strawberry-red flesh. Plant in full sun, or grow it in a pot and overwinter in a garage in the coldest zones.

Full planting & care

Planting+

Choose a spot with full sun and adaptable, well drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep, set the tree so the top of the root ball is level with the ground, backfill, and water in well. Space about 10 ft. - 12 ft. from other plants.

Watering+

Water deeply about once a week while it establishes, then ease off as roots take hold.

Fertilizing+

Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer formulated for trees and shrubs. A second light feeding in early summer supports vigorous growth. Avoid fertilizing late in the season.

Pruning+

Prune lightly in late winter to shape; for a formal hedge, trim the sides and top once or twice through the growing season to keep it dense.

Frequently asked questions

Will it survive a cold winter?+

Yes. Even if the top dies back in a hard freeze, the roots survive to zone 5 and resprout to fruit on the new season's growth.

Does it need another fig to fruit?+

No. It's self-pollinating and produces a full crop from a single tree.

When do the figs ripen?+

The main crop ripens in late summer to early fall on the current season's wood.

What zones can it grow in?+

It's hardy in the ground across USDA zones 5-10, and can be container-grown and overwintered indoors in colder areas.
